Level 3 Award in Education & Training (RQF)

Build the knowledge & confidence to plan and deliver effective training
Are you ready to move from being experienced in your subject to being able to teach it effectively?
Knowing how to perform a treatment or professional skill is not the same as knowing how to teach it. A good trainer must be able to plan learning, explain information clearly, adapt to different learners, create an inclusive environment and assess whether learning has taken place.
The Focus Awards Level 3 Award in Education and Training is an introductory regulated teaching qualification for people who want to begin teaching or training adults.
It is also suitable for existing trainers who want to formalise their experience with a recognised qualification.
Who this qualification is for
This qualification may be suitable for you if you:
- want to begin teaching or training adults;
- are preparing to become a beauty, aesthetics, massage or holistic trainer;
- have strong occupational experience but no formal teaching qualification;
- currently deliver demonstrations, workshops or training sessions;
- are already teaching and want to strengthen your knowledge and approach;
- work as an assessor and want a broader introduction to teaching;
- want to understand how to plan and deliver inclusive learning;
- need a regulated teaching qualification for your role or future progression.
You do not need to be employed as a teacher before beginning the qualification.
However, you should already have appropriate knowledge, qualifications and occupational competence in the subject you intend to teach.
What will this qualification help you do?
The qualification will help you understand how to move beyond simply demonstrating what you do.
You will develop the knowledge and skills needed to:
- understand your role and responsibilities as a trainer;
- establish appropriate professional boundaries;
- create a safe and supportive learning environment;
- identify learners’ individual needs;
- plan an organised teaching session;
- set clear aims and learning outcomes;
- select appropriate teaching activities and resources;
- explain information in ways learners can understand;
- encourage participation and engagement;
- adapt your teaching for different learning needs;
- use inclusive teaching approaches;
- check whether learning has taken place;
- give constructive feedback;
- evaluate your own teaching performance;
- understand the basic principles of assessment.
Why experienced practitioners still need teaching skills
Being technically skilled does not automatically make someone an effective trainer.
As a trainer, you need to be able to break complex skills into manageable stages, explain why procedures are carried out, recognise when a learner is struggling and provide feedback that helps them improve.
You must also understand your responsibilities around areas such as:
- health and safety;
- equality and diversity;
- safeguarding;
- confidentiality;
- professional boundaries;
- record keeping;
- learner support;
- referral to other professionals.
This qualification provides an introduction to these responsibilities and helps you begin developing a more professional and structured approach to teaching.
What you will learn
During the qualification, you will study three main areas.
Roles, responsibilities and professional relationships
You will learn about:
- the trainer’s role and responsibilities;
- relevant legislation, regulatory requirements and codes of practice;
- equality, diversity and inclusion;
- establishing appropriate professional boundaries;
- maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment;
- working with other professionals;
- identifying when a learner may need additional support;
- referring learners to appropriate sources of help.
Inclusive teaching and learning
You will learn how to:
- identify and respond to individual learning needs;
- create an inclusive learning environment;
- plan a teaching session;
- write appropriate aims and learning outcomes;
- select suitable teaching and learning methods;
- use resources effectively;
- encourage learner participation;
- adapt teaching for different abilities and learning preferences;
- communicate clearly with individuals and groups;
- motivate and engage learners;
- give constructive feedback;
- evaluate the effectiveness of a teaching session.
Principles of assessment
You will develop an understanding of:
- why assessment is used;
- initial, formative and summative assessment;
- different assessment methods;
- planning assessment;
- involving learners in assessment;
- giving assessment feedback;
- making fair and consistent assessment decisions;
- maintaining assessment records;
- confidentiality and data protection;
- legal and professional requirements;
- quality assurance within assessment.
This qualification introduces the principles of assessment. It does not qualify you as a vocational assessor.
Your microteaching session
An important part of the qualification is your microteaching assessment.
Microteaching gives you the opportunity to plan, deliver and evaluate a short teaching session in a supportive environment.
You must participate in at least one hour of microteaching activity. Within this, you will deliver a teaching session of at least 15 minutes that is observed and assessed.
Your session may be delivered:
- in your own workplace or training environment;
- to a suitable group of learners;
- in another format agreed with your tutor and assessor.
You will choose a subject that allows you to demonstrate your teaching skills. Your tutor will provide detailed guidance about the session requirements before you begin planning it.
During your microteaching session, you will need to demonstrate that you can:
- introduce the session clearly;
- explain the purpose and intended learning;
- present information in a logical sequence;
- use appropriate teaching methods;
- involve and engage the learners;
- communicate clearly;
- check that learning has taken place;
- manage the available time;
- conclude the session appropriately.
After delivering the session, you will complete a written reflection evaluating your performance.
Reflecting on your teaching
Effective trainers do not simply deliver a session and move on. They consider what worked, what did not work and how the learning experience could be improved.
After your microteaching session, you will reflect on areas such as:
- whether your aims were achieved;
- how effectively you communicated;
- whether learners were engaged;
- how well your activities and resources worked;
- how you checked understanding;
- how you managed the session;
- what you would change next time;
- what you need to develop further.
Reflective practice is an important part of becoming a confident and effective trainer.
How the qualification is delivered
The qualification is completed through guided study, written assignments and the practical microteaching assessment.
Your tutor will guide you through the required learning and explain the evidence you must produce.
Depending on the delivery arrangements agreed with your Jane Bryan Beauty Training centre, your learning may include:
- course materials;
- guided home study;
- tutor-led learning;
- individual tutor support;
- assignment guidance;
- feedback on submitted work;
- preparation for your microteaching session;
- assessment of your teaching practice.
You will need access to a computer and Microsoft Word or an equivalent word-processing programme.
How you will be assessed
This is an internally assessed regulated qualification.
You will complete:
- written assignments;
- a planned microteaching session;
- at least 15 minutes of observed teaching;
- a written reflection on your teaching performance;
- any additional evidence or corrections required by your assessor.
Your written assignments will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the three units.
Your microteaching assessment will demonstrate that you can apply key teaching principles in practice.
All required evidence must be successfully completed, assessed and internally quality assured before the qualification can be awarded.
The assignment process
You will be given clear guidance for each written assignment.
Your assignments will cover areas such as:
- your role and responsibilities as a trainer;
- maintaining professional relationships and boundaries;
- creating a safe and supportive learning environment;
- inclusive teaching and learning;
- identifying individual learner needs;
- planning teaching sessions;
- choosing appropriate teaching methods and resources;
- assessment principles and methods;
- legal and professional responsibilities.
Your assessor will review your work and provide feedback.
Where an answer does not yet meet the required assessment criteria, you will be asked to provide additional information or make corrections. This is a normal part of completing a regulated qualification.
Tutor support
You will receive support from an allocated tutor or assessor throughout the qualification.
Your tutor will:
- explain the qualification requirements;
- provide guidance on the written assignments;
- help you interpret the assessment questions;
- provide feedback on submitted work;
- help you prepare for the microteaching assessment;
- explain what evidence you need to provide;
- identify any corrections or additional evidence required;
- assess your completed portfolio.
You will still need to take responsibility for managing your study time, completing the assignments and preparing your teaching session.

What this qualification does - and does not - qualify you to do
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training provides an introduction to teaching and training.
It helps you develop the underpinning knowledge and initial teaching skills required to begin working as a trainer.
However, holding this qualification does not automatically mean that you are occupationally competent to teach every subject.
To teach a vocational subject safely and credibly, you should also have:
- an appropriate qualification in the subject;
- current occupational knowledge;
- sufficient practical industry experience;
- competence in the skills you intend to teach;
- suitable professional insurance;
- any additional qualifications required by your employer, centre, awarding organisation or accrediting body.
For specialist beauty and aesthetic treatments, a teaching qualification should sit alongside substantial treatment knowledge and practical experience.
Can you teach after completing this qualification?
The qualification may allow you to begin teaching or training, depending on the requirements of the organisation, course provider or accrediting body you intend to work with.
Different organisations may set additional requirements relating to:
- occupational qualifications;
- industry experience;
- teaching experience;
- assessor qualifications;
- professional insurance;
- safeguarding;
- quality assurance;
- continuing professional development.
You should check the requirements of your intended employer, training centre or accrediting organisation before assuming that the Level 3 Award alone will meet every teaching requirement.
Progression opportunities
After completing this qualification, you may wish to progress to:
Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
This is suitable for trainers who also want to assess learners’ occupational knowledge and practical competence.
Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice
This may be an appropriate later progression route for qualified and experienced assessors who want to move into internal quality assurance.
Additional entry and experience requirements may apply to progression qualifications.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be teaching already?
No.
The qualification is suitable for people who are not currently teaching, as well as existing trainers and assessors who want an introductory teaching qualification.
You will, however, need to plan and deliver a microteaching session as part of your assessment.
Do I need a qualification in the subject I want to teach?
You should have suitable qualifications, knowledge and occupational competence in the subject you intend to teach.
The Level 3 Award teaches you how to begin teaching. It does not give you competence in the vocational subject itself.
Is this qualification only for beauty trainers?
No.
The teaching principles can be applied across different sectors.
However, Jane Bryan Beauty Training specialises in supporting beauty, aesthetics, massage, holistic and related vocational professionals, so examples and tutor guidance may be particularly relevant to these industries.
Is this a CPD course?
No.
This is a regulated Focus Awards qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework.
There is no separate CPD stage or interim CPD certificate included within this programme.
Will I receive a certificate for attending?
No.
You must successfully complete all written assignments, the microteaching requirements, your reflective account and any other required evidence.
The qualification certificate is awarded only after all assessment and quality-assurance requirements have been met.
How many assignments are there?
You will complete three written assignments, covering the units included within your programme.
Your tutor will provide detailed guidance and explain the evidence required.
What is microteaching?
Microteaching is a short assessed teaching session.
You must take part in at least one hour of microteaching activity and personally deliver a session lasting at least 15 minutes.
Can I deliver the microteaching session online?
The permitted format should be agreed with your tutor before you plan the session.
Your tutor will confirm whether an online, workplace or other delivery format is suitable and how the observation will be carried out.
Do I need access to real students?
You will need a suitable audience for your microteaching session.
This could be a group of learners, colleagues or other appropriate participants, subject to agreement with your tutor.
Will this qualify me as an assessor?
No.
The course includes an introduction to assessment principles, but it does not qualify you to assess vocational competence.
A separate assessor qualification is required.
How quickly can I complete the course?
The course may take from approximately five days to four months, depending on your experience, available study time and the speed at which you complete the required evidence.
Will I receive tutor support?
Yes.
Your tutor will support you with the assignments, portfolio requirements and preparation for your microteaching session.
